The Specialist 5 (SP5) rank was a senior specialist position in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1988. It was created to recognize soldiers with advanced technical skills and expertise1. The insignia for SP5 consisted of five horizontal stripes on a gold or black background, depending on the uniform2.
However, the SP5 rank was abolished in 1988, and there is no current Specialist 5 insignia in use today. The closest equivalent ranks now are Specialist 4 (SP4) and Specialist 3 (SP3), which have fewer stripes on their insignia.
