World War I & II eras, featuring a C-clasp with a T-bar hinge, a design element commonly associated with the late 19th to Early/Mid 20th century. C-clasp pinback closure is a distinctive feature of vintage craftsmanship.
The 123rd Airlift Wing has a storied history that dates back to World War II. Initially constituted as the 123rd Fighter Group and 165th Fighter Squadron in 1946, the unit received federal recognition in 1947. During the Korean War, the wing was activated and moved to Godman Field at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where it flew P-51 Mustangs and later F-84 Thunderjets in joint NATO deployments.
In 1968, the wing was recalled to federal service during the Pueblo Crisis, flying nearly 20,000 tactical hours and delivering extensive reconnaissance prints. The unit transitioned to airlift missions in 1989 with the assignment of C-130 Hercules transports, requiring retraining of ground and flight crews.
